Organizing Your Site's Top Navigation Menu (Ploud6)

The folder for a "Young Writer's Competition" is included as well. Because there's enough space, all items will stay on one line. The addition of more folders would cause the menu to wrap onto a second line, making it more distracting from the rest of the site. Additionally, it helps to keep folder titles as short and simple as possible to maximize the space available for each other folder in the menu. 

To test the flexibility of the Top Navigation menu, you can shrink your browser window manually to see what happens to the menu as it has to appear in a smaller and smaller window.

Modifying your Navigation Menu

The top navigation menu will display dropdown menus for each folder at the top level of your site (in other words, each folder that's in the Home folder). So to control what shows up on the navigation menu, you have two options: you can hide specific items, or you can control what folders are added to the Home folder. The following are some common folders that can appear at the top level of your site:

• Home
  • Kids & Teens
  • eShelf & Research
  • News & Events
  • About Us
  • Español
  • Staff Area

As an example, if you would like to add a section called "Community Resources" to your site. In deciding where to place this folder, you could:

• Nest your new section inside an existing top-level section. This might look like:
  • Home
    • About Us
      • Community Resources
• Replace an underutilized section with the new one. This might look like:
  • Home
    • Community Resources
      • Kids & Teens
